Pokemon Base Set launched in 1999 and fundamentally transformed the trading card hobby. As the foundational release for the Pokemon TCG, it introduced collectors worldwide to the franchise's vibrant universe and established collecting conventions that endure today. Shadowless printings, lacking the drop shadow behind the set symbol, represent the earliest print run and remain deeply sought by enthusiasts. This edition captures the raw energy of Pokemon's cultural explosion. Metapod, the cocoon evolution of Butterfree, appears here in its classic depiction from the original card pool. While often overlooked compared to headline Pokemon, Metapod holds nostalgic appeal for those who experienced Base Set's initial release. Its presence in early collections makes shadowless copies particularly meaningful to dedicated Base Set builders pursuing complete runs.
