Gym Challenge arrived in 2000 as one of the earliest expansions for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, released during the franchise's explosive growth in the West. The set introduced Gym Leader-themed cards that expanded the competitive landscape beyond the base set, giving collectors their first taste of specialized trainer decks and powerful Pokémon associated with iconic gym battles from the video games. Lt. Surge's Pikachu captures one of the series' most beloved characters—the electric-type specialist gym leader—alongside his signature Pokémon. The card appeals to collectors drawn to memorable trainer-Pokémon partnerships, nostalgic gym badge imagery, and the foundational era when Pokémon TCG was establishing its core identity.
