Gym Challenge arrived in 2000 as the second expansion exploring Pokemon's gym leader theme, deepening the competitive narrative established in its predecessor. This set expanded the Gym Heroes concept across multiple leaders and their associated Pokemon, becoming a cornerstone of late-era Base Set collecting. The gym leader cards themselves remain iconic within the hobby, representing a pivotal moment when Pokemon TCG storytelling moved beyond simple type advantages into character-driven deck building. Sabrina's Haunter captures the mystique of the Saffron City gym leader through her psychic-type Pokemon. The card reflects the artwork style and creative direction that made Gym Challenge memorable for collectors—visually distinctive trainer pairings that celebrate the relationship between leader and Pokemon. Collectors seek these gym-specific cards for both their narrative appeal and their representation of a beloved era in the game's history.
