The 1989 Topps Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set captured the cultural phenomenon at its peak, releasing trading cards during the franchise's explosive popularity across comics, cartoons, and toy aisles. This early TMNT card issue remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors who grew up during the late eighties boom, representing a pivotal moment when the Turtles dominated youth culture and the trading card market responded enthusiastically. Card #1, "The Epic Begins," serves as the set's anchor and introduction to the TMNT universe for card collectors. Its opening position and iconic imagery make it a natural starting point for building the set, which is why many collectors seek this card as the foundation of their TMNT collection.
