Gym Challenge arrived in 1997 as one of the earliest Japanese expansions, releasing during Pokemon's explosive initial wave in Japan. The set introduced Gym Leader cards and brought beloved characters from the anime into the TCG, creating immediate appeal beyond casual players. Japanese Gym sets remain foundational to vintage collecting, representing the hobby's golden era when Pokemon cards were primarily entertainment rather than speculative assets. Lt. Surge's Raichu exemplifies why Gym Challenge endures—pairing an iconic gym leader with his signature electric-type evolution. The holographic Japanese printing captures the era's distinctive aesthetic, and Surge himself holds particular appeal given his memorable anime presence. Collectors gravitate toward Gym Leader cards for their character connection and historical significance in the TCG's earliest competitive formats.
