EX Sandstorm arrived in 2003 during the Pokémon Trading Card Game's golden age of experimentation. The set introduced the EX mechanic, a controversial but defining feature that allowed powerful Pokémon to deal extra damage while accepting the risk of giving up two prize cards when knocked out. This risk-reward dynamic fundamentally shifted competitive strategy and remains influential in modern play. The set's desert theme offered visual variety after years of traditional gym and legendary-focused releases. Steelix represents one of Sandstorm's most sought Steel-type Pokémon, combining raw power with strategic appeal. The card's artwork captures the massive, armored evolution in striking detail. Collectors prize this Steelix for its blend of competitive playability and visual impact during an era when Steel types were gaining recognition in both the game and the trading card world.
