EX Sandstorm arrived in 2003 as part of the pivotal EX era, when the TCG introduced powerful dual-type mechanics and higher-risk gameplay centered around EX Pokémon. This set represented the hobby's shift toward competitive play and collectible rarity, with the EX mechanic fundamentally changing how players approached deck building and strategy. Sandstorm's desert theme and diverse roster made it a beloved entry point for many collectors entering the competitive scene. Illumise, the Bug/Electric firefly Pokémon, captures the vibrant energy characteristic of this era's artwork. Its glowing presence and dynamic composition reflect the set's emphasis on visually striking cards that appealed equally to players and visual collectors. Bug-type Pokémon from this period have developed a dedicated following among those who appreciate the overlooked charm of these designs.
