Signature comparison
This card. The signature as cropped from the slab photo (front).
Below, the known examples Crown compared it with. Examples with stronger proof (signed in front of staff, or certified by an independent authenticator) carry the most weight.
Feature by feature
| Feature | This card | Known examples | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall form and proportions | Two parts: a small low 'm/M' lead-in, then a larger 'P' with a stem and a looped bowl that trails into rightward horizontal strokes. Compact and wide rather than tall. | R2, R4: a small 'm' lead-in followed by a large round 'P' bowl with a descending stem and a crossing horizontal stroke. R3, R6: an angular 'M' followed by a tall looped 'P' and a long horizontal extension. R1, R5: a similar large looped form. | Natural variation |
| Slant and baseline | Roughly upright to slightly right-slanted, on a flat horizontal baseline. | Upright to slightly right-leaning. The baseline is often less disciplined because the references are larger and freer. | Natural variation |
| Letter construction | The 'm' is made as small humps. The 'P' has a down-stem with the bowl made as a flattened loop that continues into horizontal strokes. | The 'm/M' ranges from humped (R2, R4) to angular (R3, R6). The 'P' bowl is consistently large and round, with the stem crossing through it. Ours has the same sequence but a flatter bowl. | Natural variation |
| Connecting strokes | Apparent pen lift between the 'm' and the 'P'. The 'P' bowl connects in one motion to the horizontal trailing strokes. | A lift between the 'm' and the 'P' is also seen in R2, R4 and R6. The bowl-to-horizontal continuation matches R6 and R3. | Match |
| Starting and ending strokes | Starts at the lower left of the 'm'. Ends with a rightward horizontal stroke that appears tapered. | Same lower-left start. They end with a long rightward horizontal stroke (R6 most clearly, also R3). | Match |
| Line quality and speed | Appears fluent, with smooth curves. No obvious tremor or blunt stops can be seen at this resolution. | Fast, fluent strokes throughout. | Match |
| Pen pressure pattern | Fairly even blue line. The crop resolution limits any judgment of pressure. | Variable, but the images are mostly low resolution. | Not assessable |
| Spacing | Tight gap between the lead-in and the 'P'. | Similar small gap in R2 and R4. Wider in R6 because of the larger surface. | Natural variation |
| Flourishes and underlines | Horizontal trailing strokes through and past the 'P' work as the flourish. | A horizontal crossing or trailing stroke appears in R2, R3, R4 and R6. | Match |
| Placement and size | Centered in the Panini autograph window, and small relative to the window height. | Larger across photos, balls and older cards (R3 signed across the card art). Size difference is explained by the confined signing area. | Natural variation |
Examiner notes
Ours is from a 2024 Panini NBA Hoops Great Significance autograph, signed roughly 15–20 years after Peterson's playing career. R3 is a 2005-06 Topps card, and R6 shows him in a Raptors jersey, likely 2000–2007. R1, R2, R4 and R5 are undated but appear to come from his playing years or soon after, based on the photos on the items. There is no era-matched (2020s) reference. A more compressed, flatter and abbreviated form late in life is a common natural change and would explain the main differences.
How Crown authenticates autographs: the signature is compared with known examples gathered from Crown's own authenticated cards, independent authenticators and public listings, measured by software, examined by an AI forensic model, and signed off by Crown Grading staff. The decision above is Crown's.
