# Card Notes The 1999 Pokemon Base Set Shadowless edition represents the true beginning of Pokemon's trading card phenomenon in North America. Released before the "1st Edition" stamp became standard, these early printings arrived in limited quantities and quickly became scarce as the hobby exploded. Shadowless cards lack the drop shadow behind the artwork that appeared on subsequent printings, making them instantly recognizable to collectors. This set established the visual language and gameplay foundation that still defines Pokemon TCG today. Pikachu remains the franchise's iconic mascot and most beloved character, making any version of this card highly sought by enthusiasts. Collectors prize Shadowless Pikachu for its historical significance as an original printing of the series' most recognizable face. Whether drawn to the character's cultural impact or the set's foundational role in TCG history, fans consistently seek quality examples of this enduring classic.
