The Gym Challenge set marked a significant evolution in the Pokémon TCG, introducing trainers as central characters with their own signature cards. Released in 2000, it captured the spirit of the anime's Gym Leader saga and remains a cornerstone of first edition collecting. These cards bridged the gap between the earliest sets and the game's expanding competitive scene, making them essential reference points for understanding the hobby's foundational years. Misty's Horsea exemplifies the appeal of trainer-specific Pokémon cards from this era. The card celebrates the bond between trainer and creature, featuring artwork that reflects Misty's water-type specialization. Collectors pursue these character-linked cards for their narrative significance and nostalgic connection to the anime series that drove the hobby's cultural moment.
