Gym Challenge arrived in 2000 as the second set exploring Pokémon's gym leader theme, deepening the TCG's competitive landscape. The Gym series marked a transitional era between Base Set nostalgia and the increasingly complex mechanics ahead. First editions from this set remain widely collected for their historical significance and the era they represent in the game's evolution. Lt. Surge's Voltorb captures the electrifying gym leader's signature Pokémon, rendered in the distinctive late-90s illustration style collectors prize. Gym Challenge trainers and their Pokémon attracted dedicated followers, and electric types held particular appeal for their visual dynamism. This card represents that specific moment when the TCG balanced accessibility with the deepening competitive interest that would define the hobby's trajectory.
