Gym Challenge arrived in 2000 as one of the most celebrated expansions in the Pokemon TCG's early era. The set introduced Gym Leaders as a central theme, featuring powerful trainer cards and strengthened Pokemon that reflected competitive battling. These cards became foundational for countless collections and remain iconic markers of Pokemon's trading card renaissance during its peak mainstream popularity. Koga's Ekans exemplifies the set's appeal—a poison-type snake that captures both the character's gym identity and the era's bold artwork style. Collectors prize gym-specific Pokemon for their thematic significance and the nostalgia they carry. First Edition copies remain particularly sought after by enthusiasts building comprehensive gym leader collections or revisiting the TCG's formative years.
