Gym Challenge arrived in 2000 as one of the final sets from the original Pokémon Trading Card Game era, before the game transitioned into its next phase. Released during peak Pokémon fever, these cards represent a critical window in the franchise's history—a time when the TCG was a cultural phenomenon and these releases shaped the modern collector landscape. The set featured Gym Leaders as the focal point, making it memorable among enthusiasts who grew up during this golden age. Koga's Grimer showcases one of the set's defining characteristics: Gym Leader-specific Pokémon cards that gave common creatures new identity and purpose. Collectors appreciate this card for its connection to Koga, the Fuchsia City Gym Leader, and the distinctive artwork that distinguished it from previous Grimer printings. It represents both nostalgia and the set's unique appeal to those building collections from this formative era.
