Garbage Pail Kids stickers emerged in the mid-1980s as a cultural phenomenon that challenged collectible norms. Topps' irreverent parody cards spoofed popular culture with crude humor and imaginative artwork, captivating kids and inadvertently creating a serious collector base. The 1987 series represents the franchise at peak popularity, when these satirical stickers dominated schoolyards and sparked urban legends about their supposed danger—precisely what made them irresistible. Haley Comet exemplifies the set's clever wordplay and visual wit, transforming a recognizable reference into something absurdly comic. These character-driven cards became iconic precisely because they balanced creative design with the subversive humor that made GPK a counterculture collectible, appealing to those who appreciated irreverence alongside artistic execution.
