Gym Heroes, released in 2000, marked a pivotal moment in the Pokemon TCG's Western evolution. Following the initial explosion of Base Set fever, this set introduced the Gym Leaders as central characters and mechanics, grounding the game in the anime's beloved Kanto region. It represented the hobby's transition from speculative frenzy to deeper engagement with Pokemon lore, offering collectors and players alike a bridge between nostalgia and strategic gameplay. Brock's Onix captures one of anime's most iconic partnerships. The Rock-type powerhouse was central to Brock's identity as a trainer, and this card's artwork reflects that bond. Collectors seek Gym Heroes cards featuring gym leader Pokemon as they represent foundational moments in both the TCG and the franchise—tangible connections to the stories that inspired millions to start collecting.
