Gym Heroes arrived in 2000 as a landmark set celebrating the Gym Leader structure from the original Pokemon games and anime. Following the massive success of the Base Set era, this release introduced collectors to character-specific cards and deeper lore, expanding the hobby beyond basic Pokemon gameplay. The set remains beloved for its nostalgic connection to early Pokemon culture and its role in sustaining the trading card game through a pivotal period. Misty's Staryu captures the beloved gym leader and her signature Water-type companion. The card represents an important subset within Gym Heroes that tied characters directly to specific Pokemon, appealing to fans of the anime and those building thematic collections. These character-focused cards have maintained collector interest for decades, particularly cards featuring the series' most recognizable figures.
