The Gym Challenge set, released in 2000, marked a significant shift in the Pokémon Trading Card Game by introducing Gym Leader-themed decks and cards tied to specific trainers. This set deepened the connection between the TCG and the video game universe, allowing collectors to build around their favorite gym leaders. Gym Challenge remains a cornerstone of early 2000s collecting, representing a creative period when the game was expanding beyond simple type-based organization. Brock's Sandslash captures one of the franchise's most beloved characters through his signature Pokémon. The card showcases the relationship between trainer and Pokémon, a thematic element that defined the Gym series. Collectors seek these trainer-specific cards both for their connection to memorable characters and as part of the comprehensive gym leader collections that many enthusiasts pursue.
