The 1989 Topps Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set captured the phenomenon at its peak, arriving as the franchise dominated pop culture. Released during the original cartoon's golden era, these cards brought the TMNT universe to collectors in vibrant color. The set remains a time capsule of late-80s collecting enthusiasm, when kids sought out cards featuring their favorite heroes in a half shell alongside memorable scenes and characters from the expanding TMNT mythology. Card #12, "It Began In Japan…," depicts the origin moment that started it all—the fateful encounter with the mysterious radioactive ooze that transformed four ordinary turtles into heroes. This foundational narrative card appeals to collectors interested in the franchise's mythology and serves as a visual anchor to the origin story that defined the entire TMNT legacy.
