Signature comparison
This card. The signature as cropped from the slab photo (front).
Below, the known examples Crown compared it with. Examples with stronger proof (signed in front of staff, or certified by an independent authenticator) carry the most weight.
Feature by feature
| Feature | This card | Known examples | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall form and proportions | Large cursive 'E' followed by small compressed 'ri'. A dominant oval loop (the stylised surname initial) encloses or overlaps the right half and ends in a rightward tail. Overall the signature is wide and low, about 3:1. | R2, R3, R4, R5, R7 and R8 all show the same 'E' + small 'ri' + large oval loop with a trailing tail, in similar width-to-height proportions. R1 is near-identical. | Match |
| Slant and baseline | Slight rightward slant. The baseline drifts gently upward into the loop. | Same mild right slant and rising entry into the loop in R2, R3, R5 and R7. R6 is more upright on a dark, busy treasure-rare background. | Match |
| Letter construction | 'E' is formed as a large open lower bowl with an upper hook. 'ri' is a short sawtooth with an i-dot. The surname is reduced to one big looping oval. | Identical 'E' build in R3, R5, R7 and R8. The i-dot appears in R5 and R7. Every reference abbreviates the surname into the oval loop. | Match |
| Connecting strokes | 'E' connects into 'ri'. A pen lift precedes the oval loop, which starts from the left-centre. | Same connection and the same lift before the loop in R3, R5, R7 and R8. | Match |
| Starting and ending strokes | Starts with a leftward entry into the 'E'. Ends with a tapered tail running right and slightly down from the loop. | Tapered rightward exit tail in R2, R3, R4, R5, R7 and R8. Entry strokes are similar. | Match |
| Line quality and speed | Fluid, confident curves. The loop is smooth with no visible tremor or hesitation at this resolution. Width varies slightly along the curves. | Fast, fluid convention-speed lines across the references. | Match |
| Pen pressure pattern | Broad marker-type line, slightly heavier in the 'E' bowl and lower loop, lighter at the tail. | Similar heavier lower curves and lighter exits in R7 and R1. The paint and metallic pens in R6 and R8 are less comparable. | Natural variation |
| Spacing | Tight 'ri' cluster sits just inside or next to the left edge of the oval. | Same tight clustering in R2, R5 and R7. | Match |
| Flourishes and inscriptions | Small blue hearts scattered around the signature, plus a blue 'Luffy' inscription above, in a second pen colour. | Hearts are a recurring habit in a contrasting colour: blue in R5 and R6, red in R7, black in R8. Inscriptions appear in R5 and R8. | Match |
| Placement and size | Across the lower art and effect-text box, in black, roughly two-thirds of the card width. | R1 (same card type) and R7 place it across the effect text the same way, at similar relative size. | Match |
| Reproduction indicators | Ink appears to sit over the printed text. No halftone dot pattern is visible in the strokes. Hearts are in a separate ink colour. | n/a | Not assessable |
Examiner notes
Our card is the 2024 One Piece 2nd Anniversary participant promo (P-043), so it was likely signed at a 2024–2025 convention appearance. The Crown references (R1, R2, R6, R7) are One Piece cards from the same period. The JSA Funko references (R3–R5) are recent GalaxyCon-type convention signings. R8 is an undated vintage Pokémon card signed recently. All references reflect the same modern convention signature, so no era gap needs explaining.
How Crown authenticates autographs: the signature is compared with known examples gathered from Crown's own authenticated cards, independent authenticators and public listings, measured by software, examined by an AI forensic model, and signed off by Crown Grading staff. The decision above is Crown's.
