Released in 1999, Pokémon: The First Movie arrived at the height of a cultural phenomenon that had swept from Game Boy screens and trading cards into living rooms worldwide. For a generation of young fans, it was a first trip to the cinema with a beloved franchise, and its trailers helped build anticipation for a story that promised something weightier than the television series.
