Released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade. Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the film launched Tom Cruise to superstardom and set a template for the high-gloss action picture. Its cultural footprint — from the Kenny Loggins soundtrack to its Navy recruitment effect — remains unmatched among 1980s action films.
