Released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986, Top Gun was produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Tony Scott. The film became one of the highest-grossing pictures of the decade, launching Tom Cruise to superstardom and embedding its soundtrack and imagery into popular culture. Its depiction of U.S. Navy fighter pilot training at the Naval Fighter Weapons School remains iconic.
