Released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade, launching Tom Cruise to superstardom and embedding its soundtrack and imagery into popular culture. Produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, the film's kinetic aerial photography and MTV-influenced editing set a new template for the action genre.
