Released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade, pairing Tom Cruise with a landmark Giorgio Moroder soundtrack and unprecedented U.S. Navy cooperation that placed real F-14 Tomcats and carrier operations on screen. The film revitalized the military action genre and remains a cultural touchstone of 1980s cinema.
