Released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade, pairing Tom Cruise with a Jerry Bruckheimer production that fused military spectacle with pop-culture energy. Shot extensively on and around Naval Air Station Miramar and aboard active U.S. Navy carriers, the film's authentic flight-deck footage gave it a documentary texture that set it apart from contemporaries.
