Released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade, pairing aerial combat spectacle with a coming-of-age story set inside the U.S. Navy's elite fighter weapons school. The film launched Tom Cruise to superstardom and remains a landmark of 1980s cinema, its visual style and soundtrack still widely referenced.
