FILM NOTES

Top Gun was released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and became the highest-grossing film of that year. Directed by Tony Scott, it defined a particular strain of Reagan-era American cinema — kinetic, sun-drenched, and unapologetically stylish. The film launched Tom Cruise to full stardom and left a lasting imprint on popular culture, from its aerial photography to its Giorgio Moroder soundtrack.

This cell, titled Charlie and Maverick, captures three consecutive frames from a single intimate shot between Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell and Charlotte 'Charlie' Blackwood. Charlie leans close, a drink glass held above, her blonde hair loose as the two hold each other's gaze at near range. The repeated composition across all three frames preserves a quiet, charged moment between the two central figures exactly as it appeared on the original 35mm negative.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
