FILM NOTES

Top Gun was released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986, directed by Tony Scott. The film arrived at a moment when American cinema was leaning heavily into spectacle and patriotism, and it became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade. Shot partly with the cooperation of the United States Navy, it brought an unprecedented visual intensity to aerial sequences and helped establish Tom Cruise as a major star.

This cell captures Pete "Maverick" Mitchell across two nearly identical close-up frames, his face perspiring and his gaze directed upward, conveying the physical and psychological strain of flight. A third frame shifts to Bill "Cougar" Cortell in a matching posture, placing this cell within the film's tense opening engagement sequence, where Cougar's composure begins to fracture under pressure.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
