Top Gun was released by Paramount Pictures in the summer of 1986 and became one of the defining blockbusters of the decade. Directed by Tony Scott, the film transformed naval aviation into a cultural phenomenon, launched Tom Cruise to superstardom, and produced a soundtrack and visual language that remained influential for years. Its 35mm photography, shot with real F-14 Tomcats and Navy cooperation, gave the film an authenticity that set it apart from contemporaries.
