FILM NOTES

Top Gun was released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and became the highest-grossing film of that year. Directed by Tony Scott, it defined a particular strain of American cinema in the mid-1980s, blending military spectacle with pop romanticism. Its influence on recruitment, fashion, and the blockbuster template was immediate and lasting.

This cell, titled Charlie and Maverick, captures three consecutive 35mm frames from a quiet interior moment between Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise, and Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis. The frames show the two in a corridor, dressed in dark clothing, facing one another in conversation — a still point within an otherwise kinetic film.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
