Top Gun was released by Paramount Pictures in May 1986 and directed by Tony Scott. A defining artifact of mid-decade American cinema, it merged military spectacle with music-video aesthetics and launched Tom Cruise to full stardom. The film remains a cultural touchstone of the Reagan era and a landmark in the careers of everyone involved in its production.
