FILM NOTES

Top Gun arrived in the summer of 1986 from Paramount Pictures, directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It became a defining cultural artifact of the decade, blending military spectacle with pop soundtrack and launching Tom Cruise to full stardom. Its aerial photography, shot in cooperation with the United States Navy, set a new standard for action filmmaking and made the F-14 Tomcat iconic to an entire generation.

This cell, titled Pilot - Aerial Sequence, captures the disorienting scale and motion of flight as experienced alongside Nick Goose Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards. The frames move from a rotated, motion-blurred figure against vivid blue sky to wide grey overcast shots of distant jets in loose formation, grounding the viewer in the vast, impersonal atmosphere where Goose operates throughout the film.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
