Universal Pictures released E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in June 1982, directing Steven Spielberg toward the highest-grossing film of its decade. Built on a collaboration with screenwriter Melissa Mathison, the picture balanced suburban family drama against science fiction wonder, earning four Academy Awards and reshaping how studios approached summer releases.
