FILM NOTES

Universal Pictures released The Fast and the Furious in June 2001, arriving at a moment when street racing culture was crossing into mainstream American cinema. Directed by Rob Cohen, the film drew from a magazine article about illegal drag racing in New York and transplanted the story to Los Angeles, launching one of the longest-running franchises in studio history. Its blend of practical stunt work and kinetic editing defined an aesthetic that would influence action filmmaking throughout the decade.

This cell, titled Street Racing, captures the visceral energy at the heart of that aesthetic. The golden metallic surface fills the frame with motion blur against a dark background, a fragment of the rapid-cut racing sequences that gave the film its pulse. Shot on 35mm, the frame preserves the grain and warmth of photochemical capture during a moment of pure mechanical speed.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
