Directed by Rod Amateau and released by Atlantic Releasing Corporation in August 1987, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie arrived at the height of the trading card craze that had made Topps's gross-out sticker series a genuine cultural flashpoint. The film remains a singular artifact of late-1980s licensed entertainment, its practical creature effects and deliberately transgressive humor earning it a reputation as one of the more unusual children's properties ever committed to celluloid.
