Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly popular Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-decade. Directed by Rod Aiken, the live-action production used elaborate prosthetic puppet suits to realize the grotesque characters, making it a singular artifact of late-Reagan-era pop culture transgression. Its brief theatrical run and subsequent cult status have made original film elements genuinely scarce.
