The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, released in August 1987 through Atlantic Releasing Corporation, arrived at the height of the Garbage Pail Kids trading card craze that had swept American schoolyards since 1985. Directed by Rod Amateau, the live-action production translated Topps Company's grotesque parody cards into practical creature effects and costumed performers, earning its place as a singular artifact of late-1980s lowbrow pop culture and the era's appetite for transgressive children's media.
