Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-1980s. Directed by Rod Amateau, the film leaned into its low-budget grotesquerie, deploying elaborate puppet suits to bring the cards' crude caricatures to life. It was a commercial and critical failure, yet it has since become a genuine artifact of late-Reagan-era outsider cinema, representing a moment when children's culture openly courted transgression.
