Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-decade. Directed by Rod Amateau, the film leaned into its grotesque premise with practical creature suits and a deliberately transgressive sensibility, earning an immediate PG-13 rating and lasting notoriety as one of the more audacious cult oddities of the Reagan-era children's entertainment landscape.
