Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-decade. Directed by Rod Amateau, the film remains a singular artifact of late-eighties gross-out culture, its practical creature effects and unapologetically crude humor securing its place as a cult object studied as much for its audacity as its technical ambition.
