Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-decade. Directed by Rod Amateau, the film arrived at the height of the cards' cultural moment, translating their gross-out humor into live-action puppet work that remains a singular artifact of late-1980s outsider cinema.
