Troma Entertainment released The Garbage Pail Kids Movie in August 1987, adapting the controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-1980s. Directed by Rod Amateau, the film arrived at the height of the cards' cultural moment and has since become a genuine artifact of late-Reagan-era outsider cinema, studied as much for its audacity as its technical limitations.
