Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-1980s. Directed by Rod Amateau, the production leaned heavily on practical puppetry and animatronics to bring its grotesque characters to life, resulting in a film that was critically dismissed but has since earned a devoted cult following as an artifact of late-Reagan-era bad taste done with genuine commitment.
