Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly popular Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-1980s. Directed by Rod Amateau, the live-action production leaned into its grotesque source material, deploying elaborate practical puppet work to bring the cards' crude caricatures to life. The film performed modestly at the box office but has since earned a devoted cult following as an artifact of late-Reagan-era bad taste done with genuine commitment.
