The Garbage Pail Kids Movie was released in August 1987 by Atlantic Releasing Corporation, adapted from the wildly controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-1980s. Directed by Rod Amateau, the film became an instant artifact of its cultural moment, capturing the era's appetite for gross-out humor and anti-authority sentiment. Though critically dismissed, it has endured as a genuine cult object, representing a peculiar intersection of toy merchandising, practical creature effects, and late Reagan-era bad taste.
