Atlantic Releasing Corporation brought The Garbage Pail Kids Movie to theaters in August 1987, adapting the wildly controversial Topps trading card series that had scandalized parents and delighted children throughout the mid-decade. Directed by Rod Auerbach, the film leaned into its grotesque premise with practical creature suits and broad comedy, earning a place in cult cinema as a document of late-1980s lowbrow pop culture at its most uninhibited.
