FILM NOTES

Toei Animation released Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth in July 1988 as the third theatrical feature spun from Masami Kurumada's enormously popular manga series. Arriving during the franchise's peak television run, the film drew substantial theatrical audiences across Japan and helped cement Saint Seiya as one of the defining anime properties of the late Showa period. Its ambitious scope and operatic visual style distinguished it from the television episodes.

This cell captures Phoebus Abel in a moment of dramatic confrontation, his blue and white robes and flowing cape rendered against a deep crimson background with a pale celestial disc behind him. The strip preserves three consecutive duplicate frames of the identical composition, offering an unusual window into the printing rhythm of a 35mm theatrical release from this era.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
