FILM NOTES

Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth was produced by Toei Animation and released theatrically in Japan in July 1988, the third feature film spun from Masami Kurumada's enormously popular manga series. Arriving at the peak of the franchise's cultural dominance, the film introduced Apollo as a central antagonist and pushed Toei's theatrical animation budget visibly beyond the television series, resulting in sequences of unusual fluidity and color saturation that distinguished it from its predecessors.

This cell captures Phoebus Abel across three consecutive frames from what appears to be a single sustained confrontation sequence, his caped figure rendered against a blazing red aura and pale celestial disc. The slight progression in cape movement across all three frames preserves a rare window into Toei's hand-drawn inbetweening process, making this a genuinely instructive example of theatrical animation craft from the late 1980s.

This original motion picture film element has been examined and authenticated by Crown Grading in partnership with National Film Vault, and encapsulated for archival preservation.
