Labyrinth was released in 1986 by TriStar Pictures, produced by George Lucas and directed by Jim Henson. A blend of puppetry, practical effects, and fantasy storytelling, the film drew on Henson's lifelong craft and featured an original score by David Bowie. Though its theatrical run was modest, it became a defining cult classic of its era, representing one of the most ambitious creature-performance productions of the decade.
