Clerks arrived in 1994 through Miramax Films after its celebrated debut at Sundance, where Kevin Smith's debut feature announced a new voice in American independent cinema. Shot for roughly $27,000 on black-and-white 16mm later blown up to 35mm, the film's unvarnished dialogue and convenience-store setting defined a generation of low-budget filmmaking and launched the View Askewniverse.

This cell captures the exterior sequence surrounding Julie Dwyer's funeral, one of the film's recurring offscreen catalysts that pulls Dante away from the Quick Stop. The three consecutive frames show two figures outside the latticed storefront facade, with a third figure entering at the right edge, preserving the unhurried, documentary-like rhythm that gives the film its distinctive texture.
